iPhone New York: Is this a real iPhone spot?
June 15th, 2007 by Martin Edic
iPhone New York looks like an Apple commercial, it’s brilliantly done; but it’s not on the Apple site. Are there producers out there doing spec spots simply because they like the challenge or the product? If so, this is a new level of consumer-generated content.
The WSJ (no link- requires paid sub) today quotes market research that shows that 50% of all mobile phone users are aware of iPhone, with very little marketing; an astonishing fact from a marketing POV.
That’s the power of an iconic brand.
Update, I went back and took a closer look- I don’t think it’s official. If you watch it you never see the people’s mouthes close up. I think they went around NY shooting people talking and then dubbed in the dialog. Very well done.

Oh, and you never actually see an iPhone in the ad.
The writing is what makes this ad shine- they manage to talk about practically all the really cool features as though somerone were enthusiastically telling you about them- the ultimate viral is a friend recommending something really cool they have heard about.
