Safari 3.0 Beta can conflict with Adobe CS3 Installation
August 17th, 2007 by Frank Piacitelli
We’re a creative bunch here at Martino Flynn. And not surprisingly, we use Macs and most of us love ’em. Apple does so many things so well, though, that when they release something that doesn’t seem to perform properly, it’s all the more shocking.
So far I’ve had this reaction to the Safari 3 beta. Sure, I’m glad that they’re trying to pull some user share away from IE on the Windows platform, the “problem child” web browser. But some simple, common javascript that worked fine in Safari 2 breaks on Safari 3b. Yes, it’s a beta version – but Apple is offering it as a download and publicizing this on their site, so, on some level we web designers and developers have to deal with it.
We recently found another problem associated with the Safari 3 beta: it can interrupt installation of the Adobe Creative Suite 3. Basically, the installer stopped with a blank “Installer Alert” dialog box. Adobe tech support gave us a fix, but this cost significant time (CS3 takes about 2 hours itself to install):
- Uninstall Safari 3.0 beta using the uninstaller from the apple website
- Uninstall the partial installation of CS3 using the uninstaller
- Restart the computer
- Install CS3
- Install Safari 3.0 Beta
Adobe told us that this does not occur on all Macs with Safari 3b: “Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t”. Technically speaking, we’re referring here to Mac OS 10.4.10, Creative Suite 3 Master Collection.
If you’re going to install CS3, consider uninstalling the Safari 3 beta if you have it. Might save you some time.

Thanks for your tips.
Now, I have a question for you. When clicking an Email Link on my Dreamweaver site, I get a message that Safari does not recognize the “Mailto” URL. Any thoughts on how to correct this…or is it a beta bug?
Thanks
