Bottoms Up!

June 6th, 2008 by Corrie Carter

I grew up in a small town in the Finger Lakes. Probably too often when I was young you could hear me say, “I’m so bored. There’s nothing to do.”

Well, I’m all grown up now, and in my case, retrospect is certainly 20/20. At this point in my life, I’ve traveled enough, seen enough, done enough, and experienced enough to realize what an awesome place it was to grow up and just be. It is safe, beautiful, and here it comes…even fun.

In my adulthood, one of the things I love to do in the Finger Lakes is to go wine tasting. I like the wineries so much, I even had my wedding reception at Heron Hill.

All too often in Rochester, N.Y., you hear the same sentiment echoed. “I’m bored. There’s nothing to do.” Or, maybe that’s just what people used to say…

We recently started working with High Falls Brewing Company. Yesterday, I (along with many coworkers) had the opportunity to visit the brewery, take a tour, and do some sampling.

I have to say it was a blast. Not only did I rediscover my affinity for Genny Light (it only has 96 calories!) and Honey Brown (which I naively called “Ho Bro” the first time I ordered it at a bar), but I also learned a lot. Our tour guide was long-time brewery employee John Fisher. He knew the facility, the people, and the stories — from top to bottoms up!

Soon High Falls Brewing Company will be opening its downtown, Rochester doors to the public for guided tours and sampling. My hunch is that people will think to themselves, “Hey, this is interesting and fun. And, there is so much to do!”

What it all boils down to is perception. Sometimes when you think there’s nothing to do, it turns out maybe you just haven’t discovered it yet. When you do, and you get to know a place and its people, you have an even better appreciation for them.

Cheers!

So, the moral here is that bored children should drink wine?
