Appendix to “An Abridged Dissertation on Public Relations”

A couple members of the Martino Flynn 2008 Rochester Marathon Relay TeamIn a recent blog post, I addressed the benefits of public relations, and cited an example of how the Martino Flynn PR team worked some magic for one of our clients. Since then, I have experienced a few “firsts” that were made possible by the partners of Martino Flynn. So it only seems appropriate to “use my PR tactics” on my own agency.

The partners not only hosted an agency-wide golf tournament—my first time playing on a golf course—but they also sponsored a few employees who were interested in running the Rochester Marathon this past weekend—also my first marathon.

Martino Flynn Director of Operations, Matt Rankin runs the 2008 Rochester MarathonI wish I could say that I was the runner who completed the full 26.2-mile course—someone who thrives on the culture of running and actually loves doing it! Maybe next year I can train to be the half marathoner who smashed her own target goal of two hours. Instead, I had the honor of anchoring a relay team consisting of three other competitive-but-mostly-out-to-have-fun comrades. We placed 19th out of 49 teams in our division (woo hoo)!

In retrospect, the entire process of participating in the marathon seems to parallel our work life, and mirror the way we approach our client work here at Martino Flynn. We all took time to train and prepare for the race. Our achievements didn’t come without a few bumps in the road either…from strained or fatigued muscles and cramps, to the unseasonably hot and humid weather on race day that ran 12 trained racers into the hospital and had others requiring treatment on the scene.

A couple members of the Martino Flynn 2008 Rochester Marathon Relay TeamThe important thing is that whether our respective challenge was to run six or 26 miles, we were all committed to doing our best and finishing the race. I may be the newbie at Martino Flynn, but it’s easy to see that this approach is inherent in our blood here. We “run through the finish line,” as my dad always says.

So a big congratulations goes out to all the Martino Flynn runners for their tremendous accomplishment this weekend. I’d also like to thank my relay team once again for making the marathon a special experience to remember as my first, but definitely not my last.

Perhaps most importantly, a shout-out to all the MFers who put their hearts into their work, accomplish so much in one day, and create special experiences for their clients, too.
