FB: FaBulous?
February 25th, 2009 by Sharon Harper
Seems there’s been an awful lot of hype about Facebook of late.
For one, I overheard a colleague mention that her daughter only replies to her via FB messages, completely disregarding “normal” email communications. I also have several friends—who will remain anonymous—that are drawn by the powers of this social networking site.
What’s more, in perusing the New York Times’ Technology web page a few weeks ago, I found that the topic of Facebook consumed nearly half of the “Most Popular” emailed articles. Interestingly, the “Technology” tab is a close second behind “Business”—which leads me to my hypothesis that the current demand for discussions around technology just might exceed that of health, sports, travel, and the like.
This is probably not a big surprise to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In a recent Fortune magazine article, he hypothesized that “Your Facebook ID quite simply will be your gateway to the digital world.”
Consider his ultimate goal: to “turn Facebook into the planet’s standardized communication (and marketing) platform, as ubiquitous and intuitive as the telephone but far more interactive, multidimensional—and indispensable.”
So is Facebook really taking over our lives? If that’s the case, technology analysts should start to consider the increasing prevalence of Facebook support groups for investment purposes.
